How to Fill a PCP Air Gun at Home in India: A Complete Beginner's Guide
If you have just bought your first PCP (pre-charged pneumatic) air rifle in India, the first question is always the same: how do I fill it? Unlike spring or gas guns, a PCP stores high-pressure air — usually 200 or 300 bar — and you need the right equipment to top it up. The good news is that filling at home is simple once you understand your options. This guide walks you through everything a beginner needs to know.
The three ways to fill a PCP air gun
There are three common methods, each suited to a different budget and shooting frequency:
- Hand pump — the cheapest way to start, but hard physical work and slow. Fine for occasional shooters, tiring for regular sessions.
- Air cylinder (tank) — the most popular choice in India. You fill a portable carbon or steel cylinder once, then use it to top up your gun many times. A great balance of cost and convenience.
- Breathing air compressor — your own filling station at home. The highest upfront cost, but unlimited fills with no trips to a dive shop. Ideal for serious shooters.
Most Indian PCP owners start with a cylinder and later add a breathing air compressor as their hobby grows.
What equipment do you need?
To fill from a cylinder — the setup we recommend for most beginners — you need three things:
- An air cylinder rated to 300 bar (or 200 bar for a budget start). Carbon fiber cylinders are light; steel cylinders are heavier but cheaper. See our full carbon cylinder range and Drager cylinders.
- A cylinder valve (usually M18 x 1.5) if your cylinder does not already have one fitted.
- A filling device with a pressure gauge and hose that connects the cylinder to your gun's fill probe or quick-coupler. Browse PCP filling devices.
If you want everything in one order, our combo kits bundle the cylinder, valve and filling device together at the best value.
Step-by-step: filling from a cylinder
- Make sure both the cylinder and the gun are at room temperature and free of dust around the fittings.
- Connect the filling device to your cylinder valve, then attach the fill probe or coupler to your rifle.
- Open the cylinder valve slowly. A gradual fill protects your gun's seals and gauge — never blast air in quickly.
- Watch the gauge and stop at your gun's recommended fill pressure (commonly 200 or 250 bar — check your manual, do not just fill to 300).
- Close the cylinder valve, bleed the residual pressure from the filling device, then disconnect.
That is it. A single 3L cylinder charged to 300 bar will typically give you six to seven rifle fills before it needs topping up again.
Upgrading to a compressor
Once you are shooting regularly, refilling cylinders at a dive shop becomes a hassle. A Bauer breathing air compressor lets you fill your own cylinders and guns at home to 330 bar, with clean, moisture-free air. It is a bigger investment, but it pays for itself in convenience for any dedicated shooter.
Safety essentials
- Only use cylinders that are hydrotested and in date. High-pressure air is safe when handled correctly and dangerous when it is not.
- Always fill slowly and never exceed your gun's rated pressure.
- Store cylinders away from heat and out of the reach of children.
- Use genuine seals, washers and adapters — a correct washer or adapter prevents dangerous leaks.
